After two years, we are back in person! Sweet Potato Comfort Pie, together with the Breck School, hosts the 9th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Weekend of Service. This year’s theme is “Edify with Sweet Potato Comfort Pie: A Piece of Unity in Action” and we will celebrate the 94th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Attend in person at the Breck school (123 Ottowa Avenue North, Golden Valley MN) or via zoom. Please register soon to receive final details and help us establish a headcount for all activities.
1:00 CST Pre-program Join us as we gather before the program to unveil seven new honorees in our “Character Values: Upholding Our Beloved Community” photo exhibit. New honorees include Melvin Giles, Sharon Day, Wokie Weah, Nothundu and Vusi Zulu, Elaine Wynne and Larry Johnson.
2:00 – 4:30 CST Program. A procession of 94 pies, one for each year of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life if he were alive today, begins our event. If you would like to volunteer to carry a pie and join the procession, please email: email@example.com. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Ella Gates-Mahmoud, members of the community, artists, musicians and YOU the participants gather to make meaning of the legacy and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Story circle sharing will be facilitated by youth volunteers for conversation about our racial history and our future. The spirit of “Ubuntu” shapes all we do, and reminds us that each of us is who we are because of our beloved community. We will also award our annual Batter that Matters award. Pie slices will be offered to each in-person attendee 🙂
The simple but powerful act of preparing and sharing sweet potato pie is a revered practice for comforting one another and strengthening our human connection. Please make plans to join us!
