Healing Events, Memorial Week for Mr. George Floyd

Golden Valley, MN. — Golden Valley-based Sweet Potato Comfort Pie (SPCP) will host healing events to memorialize the anniversary week of Mr. George Floyd’s murder May 24th – 27th, 2021. Events are funded by a microgrant from the Minneapolis Foundation, Lunds and Byerly’s of Golden Valley, and Great Harvest Bread Company.

Events will begin on May 24th at an in-person, socially distanced baking event at Great Harvest Bread Company in St. Paul as volunteers and professional bakers gather and bake at least 46 pies – the age of George Floyd.

May 24th
9:00 am – 3:00 pm: Baking at Great Harvest Bread Company 534 Selby Ave., St. Paul MN 55102

10:00 am – 11:00 am: Online pie-baking with Rose McGee for students (zoom link to come)

4:00 pm – 6:00 pm: Online pie-baking broadcast from Great Harvest with Rose McGee on Zoom and Facebook Live

May 25th (Memorial date of Mr. Floyd’s murder)
10:00 am – Noon: Online healing workshop with spoken word artist, Pneuma Pierre who will lead participants in writing circles expressing “How Do You See Yourself Whole?”

1:00 pm: Pies are brought from Great Harvest to George Floyd Square (East 38th Street x Chicago Ave, Minneapolis MN), as well as gifted by individuals who baked at home to their community members.

May 26th
4:00 pm – 6:00 pm: Online event, Reflections and Healing. Features Pastor Roslyn Harmon, Mental Health Practitioner; Lee Atakpu, Attorney; Dr. Shvonne Johnson, Social Justice Activist.

May 27th
4:00 pm – 6:00 pm: Online event, Reflections and Action with community activist Dr. Shvonne Johnson. Participants will share stories of who they gifted their pies during the week.
